Toyota Frontlander 2.0L petrol vs hybrid (THS): which spec drives better for dealers?
Same body, same 2.0-litre engine family, very different running costs. A practical guide to stocking the right Frontlander.
By EVtoU Export Team

Short answer: stock the hybrid for high-mileage buyers such as taxi, ride-hailing and corporate fleets; stock the petrol for budget retail, rental and markets with little hybrid service experience. Many dealers carry both.
How do the two powertrains compare on paper?
| Hybrid (HEV) | Petrol | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0L M20F, 116 kW | 2.0L M20C, 126 kW |
| Electric motor | 83 kW / 206 Nm | — |
| System power | 147 kW (200 PS) | 126 kW (171 PS) |
| Transmission | E-CVT | CVT, 10 simulated steps |
| WLTC consumption | 4.56–4.58 L/100 km | 6.42–6.43 L/100 km |
| Fuel tank | 36 L | 47 L |
| Boot | 427 L | 438 L |
| Curb weight | 1,430–1,470 kg | 1,380–1,430 kg |
On the 2023 and 2024 models, the hybrid produces 144 kW combined and the petrol figures are the same 126 kW. The 2022 model is petrol only.
What is THS, and does it need charging?
THS is the Toyota Hybrid System: an engine, electric motor-generators and a power-split E-CVT working together. The battery is recharged by the engine and by regenerative braking, so it never needs to be plugged in. The Frontlander’s hybrid battery is lithium-ion (NCM).
Which version costs less to run?
At WLTC figures, the hybrid uses roughly 1.8–1.9 litres less fuel per 100 km than the 2026 petrol. For a vehicle driving 50,000 km a year, that is around 900 litres of fuel saved annually — real money for a fleet, less important for a private buyer driving 10,000 km. Actual savings depend on driving conditions.
Which version is easier to sell?
- Hybrid sells to: ride-hailing and taxi operators, corporate fleets, buyers in high fuel-price markets, and customers who want the newest technology.
- Petrol sells to: price-sensitive retail buyers, rental companies with low mileage per car, and markets where workshops are not yet trained on hybrids.
- Range: the petrol’s 47-litre tank gives more distance between fill-ups on long rural routes despite higher consumption.
What should dealers check before importing hybrids?
Check local duties (some markets tax hybrids differently), whether your workshop partner can diagnose hybrid systems, and customer expectations about battery life. For market-by-market notes, see our guides.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Frontlander hybrid faster than the petrol?
The 2026 hybrid has more combined power (147 kW vs 126 kW), and electric torque helps from a standstill. Top speed is 180 km/h for both.
Does the hybrid have a smaller boot?
Slightly: 427 litres versus 438 litres for the petrol.
